Weaknesses of Economy - Falls News Q&A (250 words)

What are the weaknesses of the Sheboygan Falls economy and business district?

I don't like the word weaknesses, I prefer the word 'challenges'. The major economic challenges we face are:

Location: We are located between Sheboygan and Plymouth, which means larger retail stores and restaurants tend to bypass us in favor of one of those communities. For example, I have approached several pharmacies about locating a branch in Sheboygan Falls. Our proximity to area pharmacies makes it challenging to attract one to our community, although recently we have made progress in achieving that goal.

Building market: Several of our manufacturers are very dependent on the building market, which experienced a major slow-down during the recession. With the current rise in new construction, these manufacturers are now thriving.

The new round-about at Highway 32 and Happy Lane brought Kwik Trip and boosted economic development in that area. The 45-mph speed limit as you enter our city on Highway 32 is dangerous and could have a negative impact on economic development. I am continuing to work with the State to get this speed limit reduced to 35 mph.

The delayed Highway 23 expansion is a weakness for Sheboygan Falls and the entire county. I recently met with Transportation Secretary Dave Ross regarding Highway 23. He assured me that the funds are available for the project, and Wisconsin will start the work as soon as the courts allow.

I’m confident through my leadership, Sheboygan Falls can overcome these challenges with continued effective planning and our community spirit of cooperation, coordination and communication.
